The Rogue Wave

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

In recent years, there have been many different television programs that have taken a very close look into the commercial fishing that takes place up near Alaska. Perhaps you might remember shows like the deadliest catch, which follows the precarious journey of crab fisherman who work in the freezing temperatures of the Bering Sea. But one of the extremely hazardous situations that each of these fishermen must endure, is the rogue waves that can hit the vessel and reach heights of anywhere from 65 to 100 ft tall. They also can appear suddenly and without warning even in calmer conditions, sweeping the fishermen into the icy waters below. Because of this, the fatality rate can be extremely high because they only have a few minutes without a flotation suit in order to survive in the open sea.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

A rogue wave can appear suddenly and completely unexpected, but that is just like how sin can come crashing into one’s life. But just like fishermen, who stand their ground on the ships deck, we must stand our ground in biblical Truth, and never allow ourselves to be moved by those who try to lead us away from the teachings and doctrines of the one true faith.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 (KJB)  Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

When you stand fast, you will refuse to change your mind or abandon the teachings of our faith. It is also to reject any possibility of retreat from a firmly held position of religious dogma. No matter what happens in the world, we must continue to hold the ground, just like a good soldier of Christ.

2 Timothy 2:3 (KJB)  Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

There will be some people who were Christians at one time, who are not going to be diligent enough to hold on to our ship of faith, and because of it, they are going to be swept overboard at the judgment.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 (KJB)  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Rather than being safely tethered to the teachings of Scriptural Truth, they will abandon the jackline, and embrace the doctrines of devils instead.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJB)  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

These people are the epitome of spiritual weakness, and as a soldier of Christ, you must continue your training so that you can become strong in the faith.

1 Corinthians 16:13 (KJB)  Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

Ephesians 6:10-17 (KJB)  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Just like holding fast and resisting a rogue wave, the man of God must stand fast in the teachings of our faith.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJB)  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

The Servants of Christ are different than the soldiers of this world, because our battle is a Spiritual one, and instead of using Earthly weapons, we reach out for the sword of God’s Holy Word.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (KJB)  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJB)  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Like being surrounded on all sides by a storm on the ocean, this world is filled up with innumerable false prophets, who are perverting the true doctrines of the Christian faith. Like soldiers holding a hill, the devil and his comrades must be resisted at all costs.

Hebrews 12:1 (KJB)  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

James 4:7 (KJB)  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We can lay hold on eternal life through the grace of God, but we must never drop our guard, and always be ready to fight the good fight.

1 Timothy 6:12 (KJB)  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Titus 1:9 (KJB)  Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Everybody has to be prepared and make sure that you are holding onto the bulwark of our faith, because many sailors are going to be led astray by false prophets. Rather than abiding in the truth, they will buy into all of their false teachings and heretical beliefs, only to eventually be swept overboard, by,….
