Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
I can remember as a young child, when each student in our classroom was given an assignment to create a family tree and display it for the class at the end of the week. They are also called a genealogy chart which basically is a bloodline map that shows the ancestry of your family and the relationships between you and your relatives. We spent quite a bit of time making our displays, and even glued certain photos that we had available onto large poster boards, identifying each one of our relatives and their positions within our family.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are many people who claim to be a Christian who have gotten themselves involved with genealogies, and will spend many years trying to trace their family roots in order to find out who their great, great, great granddad was. But anyone who is Spiritual understands that this is a complete waste of time because as a follower of Christ we become part of a brand new family. It doesn’t matter who your blood relatives might have been, or the lineage from which you came, what matters is becoming a brand new child of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Earthly relatives will come and go, and quite a few of them you might never see again after judgment day, but those who obediently serve our precious Lord Jesus can become part of an everlasting family, one that will never fade away.
Titus 3:9 (KJB) But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
Sometimes people can become famous, and when that begins to happen, their own blood relatives will feel like they have some special type of relationship with them that other people do not. But the truth is that blood relationships are completely irrelevant in the New Testament. Consider our precious Lord Jesus who had the same type of thing happen to Him. As people began listening to Jesus and the crowds began to grow, His own family showed up and claimed that they were His relatives, but the Lord Jesus had quite a different response for them.
Matthew 12:46-50 (KJB) While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
There is a huge difference between a brother in the flesh, and a brother according to the Spirit. One relationship is only temporal, while the other is eternal, and it all comes down to faith in Christ Jesus and humble submission to the will of God. Many of us had close relationships with family members growing up, but the truth is that a lot of them are never going to repent of their sins and go through a Spiritual conversion. In that state, they are technically an unbeliever, and rather than building strong relationships with them, we must come out from them and be separate in order to be faithful unto Christ.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (KJB) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
When we walk according to God’s will, we can become the sons and daughters of God. The Apostle Paul uses some comparisons to show that when we come to Christ Jesus we all become part of the same family together.
Galatians 3:25-29 (KJB) But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Make note that when he mentions male or female, the Apostle is using an analogy. Obviously throughout the entire New Testament there are huge differences between the roles of men and women in the family of God. But as I have said for many years, many people in false Christianity actually worship their relatives which is something that they do in certain false religions. This is one of the reasons why they exalt Mary, and pray to her in forms of Catholicism. This is a heretical false teaching put forth by false prophets, and absolutely forbidden in the New Testament. But when you begin to grow in the teachings of scripture you are going to recognize that many of your own relatives are outside the teachings of the one true faith, and at that point you are going to have to decide who you are going to follow. In order to be a true disciple of Christ, our love for Him must be greater than any other, including one’s own blood relatives.
Luke 14:25-26 (KJB) And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Remember that once you begin the Christian walk, you become a part of a brand new Spiritual family, one that is joined together through loving obedience for our precious Lord Jesus Christ. Genealogies are to be avoided because what matters most of all is transforming into a child of God through faith in Christ, and becoming a part of His everlasting……
