Spiritual Negligence

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 2:1-3 (KJB)  Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

First of all, the Christian faith is something that is learned, just like going to school and learning how to read and write. We learn the doctrines and the teachings of Christ along with God’s purpose and direction for our lives. As Spiritual instructors, the disciples were constantly preaching to the church, and bringing them into remembrance of their duties and requirements unto God.

2 Peter 3:1 (KJB)  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

But you can learn things and then later completely forget about them. I can remember learning all kinds of historical things in civics class, from battles during the civil war, and prominent cities in ancient Greece. But although I committed them to memory, I don’t know if I could name one of them today. We tend to forget about things that are really not that important to us. After all, what’s the old saying, if you don’t use it, you lose it! The Apostle warns the church to pay close attention to the things that they had been taught, because in order to retain the things that we have learned we must use them daily. We must devote ourselves to constantly refreshing ourselves each day in the high calling of Christ Jesus. Sometimes people will become a Christian for a period of time and be filled up with an enthusiastic passion to serve and obey God. But because of their own neglect, the fire that burned so brightly in their heart can begin to grow dim as they start to fall away from that close relationship that they once had with Him.

Matthew 13:22 (KJB)  He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

When people neglect things it’s because they really were not that important to them. It reminds me of a young child who gets a new toy from his dad. He’s very excited when he first receives it, and it completely captures his attention for about a month or so, but then later on he sets it aside in his closet only to collect dust. That is so fickle, but it is a quality that many professing Christians actually possess. To do that is to neglect one’s faithful relationship towards God because that passion that they once had for the Lord fades away into the darkness of forgetfulness and lukewarmness.

Revelation 3:15-16 (KJB)  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

The temporal concerns of this life might fall by the wayside, but you must never neglect the things concerning our own salvation. The terminology “once saved always saved” are words that are more filthy than all of the manure out in my chicken shed. The only things those words promote are laziness, sloth and a disinclination to rise up each day and press onward in one’s faithful and obedient service towards our precious Lord Jesus. Many people will claim to know the Lord at judgment Day, but the truth is that they never served Him from the heart while they were here upon this Earth. To enter eternal life you will need to strive for it, and make great efforts to achieve and obtain it.

Luke 13:23-24 (KJB)  Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

To neglect something means to ignore, abandon, or to completely forget about it. Even the Apostle James warned the church not to forget the things that they had been taught!

James 1:22-25 (KJB)  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

God calls us to become new creatures in Christ Jesus through a complete transformation from sinners into Saints, but to complete this process will require remembering each day the doctrines and teachings of our faith. But sin can slowly creep into a person’s life when they don’t remember the high calling of God. Even when you don’t drive a four-wheeler path regularly, you can forget the way back home, and before you know it, you can end up on a different path and get lost out in the woods. But we must never forget the will of God, and it must always be at the forefront of our minds, because it is a narrow path that we must always remember, in order to get all the way home to heaven.

Psalms 119:93 (KJB)  I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

Psalms 119:15-16 (KJB)  I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

One must make a daily commitment to God, and it must outweigh any other concerns during your day. We must never slip away from loving obedience toward God, especially after everything that He did on the cross to supply us with an abundance of Grace. Those who choose the path of forgetfulness are going to reap serious consequences with God because of it.

Psalms 50:22 (KJB)  Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

Psalms 9:17 (KJB)  The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Always remember the Spiritual things that we have learned, because those who forget the high calling of God are going to be filled with everlasting shame, when they are eventually found guilty of,……
