Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
I’ve always enjoyed getting out to look at all of the natural wonders that God has created throughout the world. But just the other day I was reading about a natural phenomenon at horsetail fall in Yosemite National Park in California. It’s called the firefall, and if you haven’t seen this, I would highly suggest that you check it out. You have to walk about a mile and a half in order to get there from the parking area, but it is definitely worth it. For a couple of weeks every February, the setting sun will shine upon the water, and what it does it makes it glow a fiery orange and red, and it actually looks just like molten lava. It only lasts about ten minutes or so, right before sunset, but there are certain conditions that must be met in order to see it. The sun must be at the correct angle, there needs to be enough melting snow to feed the fall, and the Western sky must be clear of clouds. When these requirements are fulfilled, you will be able to watch this incredible natural event, and in many ways, it’s very similar to watching a volcanic eruption.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
When you are watching this peaceful waterfall, it only takes a a matter of minutes, and everything quickly changes, which is the same way that it will be at the end of this world. That moment is going to come as a thief in the night, when everything is burned up by God with fervent heat.
2 Peter 3:10-13 (KJB) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. .Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
During the days of Noe and the great deluge, the Earth was completely flooded but was eventually repopulated, but what is coming in the future for this Earth is complete and utter destruction. I’ve heard many false prophets teach that when you hand down an inheritance to your relatives, when Jesus returns, you are going to be able to regain all of your possessions once again. People such as these are complete heretics, because everything is going to be burned up, including all of the works therein. That means that the forty years that you spent building your beautiful house will be all burned up. From the pyramids of Giza to the Great Wall of China, everything is going to be utterly dissolved by God.
Isaiah 34:4 (KJB) And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
Revelation 21:1 (KJB) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
During our lives, each of us have been educated by the things of this world. One time I was visiting with a high school student who told me that he had spent many months memorizing all of the presidents in order, and could recite them very quickly. But I reminded him that after the destruction of this Earth, all of the worldly knowledge that we have gained on this Earth will cease to come into our minds any longer, and the memories of this place shall be quickly forgotten. God is creating a new Heaven and a new Earth, a reward and everlasting inheritance for all of the obedient followers of Christ Jesus. Personally, I think it’s going to be so incredible that any thoughts of the sinful place will completely vanish from our minds!
Isaiah 65:17 (KJB) For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Revelation 21:4 (KJB) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
I know that there are many people, especially those of the judaic faith who cherish the modern day city of Jerusalem, but even this will be gone, because God is creating a brand new one, in a brand new place.
Revelation 3:12 (KJB) Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
Hebrews 11:16 (KJB) But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Usually when people build a brand new home, they will knock down the old one in order to build another one in its place. But this is exactly what our precious Lord Jesus is going to do. This Earth was only temporary housing for us, because this wicked world and everything in it will eventually vanish like smoke in the wind.
Isaiah 51:6 (KJB) Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Nahum 1:5-6 (KJB) The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
Remember that Jesus explained to His disciples what was going to happen to the current Heaven and Earth.
Matthew 24:35 (KJB) Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
So if you ever get the opportunity to get out to Yosemite, I would highly suggest heading off to Horsetail Fall to take in this incredible fifteen minute phenomenon of nature. To me it’s a constant reminder of how quickly things are going to quickly change upon this Earth. Someday, just like a thief in the night, the destruction of the world will come suddenly, when everything is eventually burned up by God. In many ways, it’s just like the clear water quickly turning into the redness of lava, as it flows out of the mouth of,…..
