The Taproot

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many people in our neck of the woods have pulled out their hoes and rakes and have already begun working outside in their gardens. I’ve heard from quite a few different sources that if you really want weeds to disappear in your garden, you need to remove the entire root from the ground. This is because if you leave just a little bit remaining, many types of weeds will simply regenerate all over again.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

One of the most harmful things for the soul is when people seek after riches and wealth, because it pulls them away from a sincerely devoted relationship with God. Pursuing the dollar bill becomes more important to them than pursuing after God. This is a sinful desire that will have to be overcome in order to enter into eternal life, and just like weeding the garden, you will have to make sure that you remove the entire taproot from out of your heart.

1 Timothy 6:9-10 (KJB)  But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The love of money is terrible because rather than having a great desire to have a closer relationship with God, people will chase after the things of this world instead. At that point, the heart is divided, because you cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 6:24 (KJB)  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

The Lord warned that coveting after such things are going to cause a person to become unfruitful. This is simply because rather than spending their time seeking after God, the heart will be chasing after Earthly things instead

Mark 4:18-19 (KJB)  And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

One man actually felt that he had kept all of the Commandments of God, but Jesus took him to an area of his life that needed his attention. He was incapable of following the Lord and getting involved in Ministry, simply because his heart loved his Earthly possessions more than others.

Mark 10:17-31 (KJB)  And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

The Lord Jesus must be our greatest Love of all, and whatever you love most in this world, is what you will be spending the majority of your time doing. Jesus warned about covetousness, rather than being rich towards the things of God.

Luke 12:13-21 (KJB)  And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

What do people really need to get by everyday? Not very much. When you learn to be content with the little things that you have, there is a big door of opportunity to spend more time growing in our faith, and seeking out our precious Lord Jesus. Many people have allowed their hearts to become overcharged and consumed with all the things of this world, rather than with God. Many sorrows shall come to them, because they never really had a sincere relationship with God, because their hearts were somewhere else.

James 5:1-6 (KJB)  Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

The love of money is the root of all evil, and in order to enter into eternal life, that covetous desire will have to be extracted from your life. You will have to reach down deep inside of your own heart, and make sure that you get rid of it all, by completely removing,…..
