Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago we had an incredible thunderstorm roll through the area, and I can remember it quite vividly. This is because I opened up the front door of the cabin, and we watched for an hour as my children walked a few feet out onto the deck, and got completely drenched in the torrential downpour. It had been an incredibly hot day, and after putting on their swimsuits, they giggled with laughter when they felt that cold water pouring down upon their heads. I don’t know how many times they ran in and out of the house that day, but they sure had a lot of fun cooling down in the summer heat. But you know what, I have always found it incredible how much the temperature will drop right after a hard thunderstorm. I think in my lifetime I’ve seen it drop as much as 25° in a very short period of time. So whenever I see a thunderstorm approaching on a hot summer day, I count it as a blessing from God!
This reminds me of the Christian Life
God can create cool weather in a very short period of time, but when Faith permeates a person’s heart, things can also change in a big hurry. When people believe in Christ Jesus with all of their heart, God can save them from the heat of everlasting fire, and like turning on an air conditioner, He can begin to shower them with the cool breeze of His merciful grace.
Acts 2:38-41 (KJB) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Just like turning on a light switch inside of someone’s heart, faith can cause a person to go from darkness to light in the flip of a switch. I know the feeling because I have been there too. I remember the day I finally realized that Jesus had actually died for me on the cross. I knew that he had laid down His own life, so that I could be forgiven for all of my past sins. Sincere faith changes a person forever, and opens up your eyes to what you could never see before, and this is exactly what happens to anybody who becomes born of the Spirit.
John 3:1-8 (KJB) There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
When the Apostle Paul received the grace of God, his entire life changed so quickly that it shocked a lot of people. The man who had put forth all of his efforts to try to prevent the spread of Christianity, immediately began preaching the faith that he once destroyed.
Acts 9:17-22 (KJB) And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
Faith is incredibly powerful, because when people finally possess it, it can redeem their sinful souls, and immediately pull them out of the darkness and into the light. Like turning the key on your car ignition, the engine of their heart quickly roars to life. When they become filled up with the fire of the Holy Spirit, they will do an about face, and take a completely different direction in their lives. God wants us to go through a transformation in our lives, but for some people it can happen so fast that it’s amazing to watch the power of God working in them.
Galatians 1:23-24 (KJB) But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. And they glorified God in me.
It’s such a joy to be able to cool down on a hot day, as I think back to that hot afternoon as I listened to the laughter of my children as they danced in the pouring rain. God wants to save us from the heat of everlasting fire, but you must have faith in Christ to be delivered from it. When people call upon the name of the Lord with all of their hearts, change can happen very suddenly in their life, and just like a cool front moving in after a thunderstorm, they will start to experience the abundant grace of Christ Jesus, and the cooling breeze of,…
