Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was pretty young, we didn’t have game stations like the kids have today. Instead we used to play ping pong in the basement, or checkers on the kitchen table, but a lot of the time we would dig out a deck of cards and play crazy eights. But one year I can remember getting a gift, and when I ripped open the box, I found a brand new dartboard. I quickly found a nail and pounded it into the wall in my bedroom, hanging up the dartboard so I could play with the rest of the family. In order to win, you had to aim for certain targets, and the one who reached so many points first, won the game. But because I was so young, this game was a little safer because rather than throwing pointed darts, we used little round balls that were completely covered with velcro. When you stood behind the line and threw them at the board, the ball would stick fast to the target without falling off. Those velcro balls would adhere so strongly that at times they were extremely hard to separate from the dartboard.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
To adhere means to stick firmly to a surface, or to hold fast to a rule, belief or a plan. Just like velcro dart balls, we will need to hold fast to the teachings and the doctrines of our faith, making sure that we adhere to them firmly and never let them go.
2 Timothy 1:13 (KJB) Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Many times when we are repairing something, we will go to the hardware store and pick up a roll of adhesive tape. These products can be used for many different purposes and will adhere strongly to a surface.You might buy some electrical tape to wire up a wiring harness on a trailer, and many years later, the tape will still be found holding all of those wires together. Sometimes people will buy super glue, or a two-part epoxy in order to join two things together. These types of adhesives are so strong that they will not allow those two pieces to come apart. But this is the exact same way that we need to be in regards to the teachings of our faith. We must be joined so strongly to them, that no matter who tries to persuade or convince us otherwise, it is impossible for us to be turned away from the doctrines of the King James Bible. Just like Jesus being tempted in the desert, the devil will eventually come to the conclusion that any attempt to turn us away from the teachings of Christ is pointless. When the word of God is present in a man’s heart, the devil will simply run away like a whipped dog.
Titus 1:9-11 (KJB) Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
There are incredible warnings throughout the scriptures about those who turn away from their conscience, and the teachings that they have been educated in from Scripture. Rather than holding fast to that dart board, they will fall away from their faith, and turn their ears away from the things that God commands them to do.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJB) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
1 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJB) Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
God must never be trifled with, because when you are educated in Scripture, and then you choose to detach yourself from the things that the teachings of our faith demand, you are going to end up in a world of hurt. A woman might rebel against her husband and divorce him. Others might sin against their dad and run away from home. But I want to make sure that you hear this very clearly. If you are going to act in this manner towards the teachings of Christ, then you are going to reap the fire of His vengeance. These kinds of people are truly worthless, because they rejected the path of righteousness, after they had been forgiven for their sins, so graciously by God.
2 Peter 2:20-22 (KJB) For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
The teachings of scripture must be deeply embedded in our hearts and our minds because our own salvation requires continuing in them.
1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB) Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 (KJB) Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
We must adhere firmly to the teachings of scripture, and never let them go, something I’m reminded of whenever I think back to throwing another ball, at,…..
