Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I first moved out into the woods, I did so to be faithful to the teachings of Scripture. As a Christian, we are supposed to keep separate from the world and I wanted to raise my children away from all of the sinful activities that go on all around us. They grew up extremely sheltered, but that is a far better atmosphere to raise children in, then allowing them to be influenced by the world and all of its philosophies. But when my children were born, I delivered them all directly from the womb, and right on the very bed that we slept on each night. I watched as they took their very first breath, a memory that is permanently etched in my mind. After they were breathing well on their own, and had depleted everything from their umbilical cord, I eventually tied it off, cut it, and separated them from their mother.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
An umbilical cord is the lifeline of a fetus, and transports oxygen and other essentials from the mother to the child. But just like a fetus in the womb, when we become a Christian, a new life begins, which happens when we are baptized into His name. In order for us to grow, we must receive the Spiritual sustenance that we all need, by feeding from the umbilical cord of Christ Jesus, and being regularly fed with the life-giving nutrients from God’s Holy Word.
John 14:6 (KJB) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
In order to survive in the womb, you must be connected to the umbilical cord, and the same thing must happen when we become Born Again In the Spirit. We must be continually connected to Christ Jesus and the teachings of our faith. Jesus is the life, but so are the writings of God’s Holy Word.
John 6:63 (KJB) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Just as Christ Jesus is immortal, God’s Word is immortal.
Luke 21:33 (KJB) Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Isaiah 40:8 (KJB) The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
1 Peter 1:25 (KJB) But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
Psalms 119:89 (KJB) For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
Being connected to an umbilical cord is exactly the same as abiding in a vine, and in order for any of us to mature in our faith and become fruitful, we must continually abide in Christ.
John 15:1-8 (KJB) I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
In order for a light to shine brightly, you have to plug the cord into the wall, and to have the current of Christ running through our souls, we must be plugged into Him at all times. Sometimes people only hear the Word of God preached once a week, and only for a short period of time. But can you imagine if people only ate one meal a week for twenty minutes? The sheep of God need to be fed regularly, but for many people, they simply are not hungry for Spiritual things. They might spend a short time at a church service somewhere, but then they simply unplug when it’s done, and for the rest of the week they plug themselves right back into the world once again. That doesn’t promote Spiritual growth at all, it is simply a forgetting about the things that God is calling us to do.
James 1:21-25 (KJB) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
People forget because they are disconnected from Christ, which happens because their hearts are placed upon everything else rather than Him.
Mark 4:19 (KJB) And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Just remember that an umbilical cord is the lifeline of a fetus, and each of us are a Spiritual fetus when we get forgiven for our sins and become a Christian. Christianity is not a one day a week connection with God, because sincere faith in Christ is having a daily and ongoing relationship with Him, just like one that you might have with one of your closest friends. Each of us must disconnect from the world, and reconnect unto Christ, because He is the source of our life, and our Spiritual,…..
