Delivered from the Law

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a long passage of scripture and I want to get right into it. 

Romans 7:1-6 (KJB)  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Many Jews feel that if they turn away from the Old Testament that they are going to be sinning against God, because very similar to an Earthly marriage, they are under a Covenant. But the Apostle Paul uses the example of a man who dies during his marriage. When a woman has had a successful marriage and stood by her husband’s side, when he eventually passes away, she is free from his law. Obviously if she departs her spouse, that’s a completely different situation. But the point is that Jesus died on the cross as our husbandman, to deliver us from being in bondage to the Old Testament. This was so we  walk in the New Covenant of God’s grace. 

Now imagine that all the lawyers and judges in this world took all their law books and threw them into the fire. It’s hard to imagine them doing that, but this is the very freedom for which Christ Jesus died. Over the years, many people have moved to this country in order to find freedom, but because of all the laws it can be very stressful. Nowadays they will make up rules and laws for just about anything, but Jesus summed up the entire Old Testament into two Commandments, love for God and love for your neighbor. Do this, and thou shalt live. 

Matthew 22:37-40 (KJB)  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Even the Apostle Paul didn’t want the church going to law with each other, but to suffer the wrongs that had been committed against them, just as Jesus did for each one of us. He could have actually destroyed the entire Earth when he died on the cross, but He didn’t. 

1 Corinthians 6:5-8 (KJB)  I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.

Going to law with others shows that you are not walking in love, whether it’s a divorce case or some other lawsuit, and it is charity out of a pure heart that is the fulfillment of the commandment of God. Jesus died on the cross so we would learn to walk in love towards each other, rather than living in malice and all of the rest of the sinful work of darkness. But it is clear from the teachings of Scripture that no one can be justified by the Old Testament law. This is because that by it, is the knowledge of sin, and not a single person kept it in the first place. So Jesus fulfilled everything in it, and when He died on the cross, everything from that point on, the New Testament of Christianity began. 

Galatians 3:22-27 (KJB)  But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Romans 7:7-20 (KJB)  What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

What the Apostle is teaching here is that the more he looked at the law, the more he realized that it killed him, because out of the words of his own mouth, he explained what a sinful wretch of a man that he was. The more intently that he looked at the law, the more intently he realized that fact. This is why we all need God’s grace because without it, none of us could ever get to heaven. 

Romans 7:21-25 (KJB)  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Christians are no longer under the old Covenant, being in bondage to that which we could never be justified by anyway. We are now under the command of baptism, not circumcision in the flesh, being freely justified by His grace, and,…..
