Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 2nd Thessalonians.
2 Thessalonians 3:11 (KJB) For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
A busybody is a meddling or a prying person, and what they do is get themselves involved in the affairs of other people. Perhaps some of you remember the old saying,….”don’t stick your nose into another man’s business.” Within the family unit, there is a dad, a mother, and the children, and it’s commonly referred to as a household. In a Christian family, the dad is ultimately the leader over his own household. Things from outside of that household can be prone to meddling, such as in-laws, grandparents, other relatives, or even ones neighbors. Meddling in another man’s household is a sin.
The word meddle means to interfere in, or busy oneself unduly with something that is not their concern, such as meddling in the private affairs of others. It is also defined as a person who is too interested in things that don’t really involve them, or, someone who is interested in things that do not involve him or her, especially other people’s private matters. The word private means belonging to or for the use of one particular person or group of people only, and the privacy that we are talking about here today is a man’s household. The man is the head of his household. He’s the head over his wife and the children. God has placed him in that place of authority in that home. A busybody will interject themselves into that family and the private affairs that go on inside of that home.
Another dictionary describes mettle as to intervene, to intrude or to pry into other people’s affairs or interfere with things that are none of their business. Busybodies get themselves involved inbetween a man and a wife or the relationships that they have with their children. They get themselves involved with things that do not concern them at all. They are a meddler and an intruder in a man’s life and the authority that he has over his own household. A busybody might go around town telling information to other people that is none of their business at all. What they do is they make it their business to tell others, and if they have got time for doing that, they should make better use of their time and go work more with their hands instead of their tongues.
1 Timothy 5:13 (KJB) And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
The word tattle means to report to others another person’s wrongdoings. Remember that love covers a multitude of sins, but a malicious tattler does not love other people. The Apostle Paul taught the ministers to rebuke people in the church sharply, and to do it openly, but that is a lot different than tattling. This was done so they could correct themselves from the error of their way. Tattling on someone else is a whole different issue because it is about wanting to exalt yourself over another person. Tattle means that you find mistakes or errors about somebody else, and then you go out to people outside your direct household and tell everybody about it. This is why divorce courts can be filled up with these types of activities.
To tattle means to tell secrets about what somebody else has done or to blab about them. It means to disclose information or to gossip and to chatter. This is not love for the other person. The tattler is trying to put themselves in a better light and it is fleshy and it worldly. Tattle means to gossip about another’s personal matters or secrets. It means to divulge confidential information or secrets. Gossip is sharing information that should not be shared with others.
Imagine going to a church somewhere and somebody comes up to you and confesses their sins in private, but then you go out and tell everybody in the community all of the things that were confessed to you in private. To go out and share that information in the community would be gossip. Gossip is very very dangerous because people can be harmed socially if the outcome of the gossip is to spread negative private information that could harm their reputation or could affect their social standing in the community. Gossip is designed to impugn the reputation of others. A gossip is a person who repeats stories about other people, and speaks about their personal and private lives. It’s rumor or talk about a personal or intimate nature, and they will reveal secret information to others that was unknown to them previously.
Leviticus 19:16 (KJB) Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people:
A talebearer is a person who maliciously gossips or reveals secrets. Remember, it teaches in the scriptures that a wife is supposed to be discreet if she is actually serving Christ. A talebearer is a person who spreads gossip or secrets that may cause trouble or harm to the other party. Another dictionary says a talebearer is someone who gossips in an indiscreet manner.
Proverbs 11:13 (KJB) A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
Proverbs 18:8 (KJB) The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Proverbs 20:19 (KJB) He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
The word discreet means careful and circumspect in ones speech or actions especially in order to avoid causing offence or to gain an advantage over somebody else. Some other synonyms for a busybody is a snoop or a nosey person. They even refer to them as a blabbermouth. They mettle in somebody else’s business, and will get involved in matters that don’t concern them at all. You should never get involved and mettle in other people’s private affairs because it is offensive to God.
Proverbs 20:3 (KJB) It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
I’ve read that the Hebrew word actually means to become very involved in something, and it refers to someone who arrogantly supposes that he or she has the right to interfere in quarrels that do not concern them. Another dictionary defines a busybody as someone who is very interested in other people’s private life and their activities, then tries to get involved in them in a way that is very annoying. A busy body is just a sinful as a murderer.
1 Peter 4:15 (KJB) But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
A man is the head of his household, and you certainly don’t want to offend him by getting yourself involved with the wicked works of,…….
……The Busybody
