Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Have you ever had a promise given to you by your dad, that if you maintained a three-point average throughout the school year that he would pick you up a special reward? Maybe you like to go fishing, so he told you that if you successfully completed your classes, he would purchase you some fishing gear and a brand new kayak! Just the thought of getting something like that can really help motivate a person to put forth the extra effort needed to do well in class. When you believed in the promise that he gave you, you knew that he was going to bring it to pass, which caused you to work very hard that year at keeping up your grades.
This reminds me of a Christian Life.
There are numerous promises throughout the scriptures that each of us can claim through a good and obedient heart towards God. When you walk according to His will, He will fulfill His promises and bring forth His blessings. Abraham was one such man, who served the Lord Jesus with all of his heart. Even though he had to wait many years, he completely trusted in God, and was absolutely convinced that the things that God had promised to Him, He would certainly bring to pass.
Romans 4:19-25 (KJB) And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
God gives us a promise that He is going to do what He says He will do. But on the other hand, you are going to need to do the things that He expects you to do! Sometimes people expect a paycheck at a job, but then they never show up for work! They want a reward for something, but they are not willing to do anything to obtain it. Christianity is a race for an eternal prize, one that will be given to the obedient and faithful children of God. If people are too lazy to strive hard to obtain it, then they are only deceiving themselves.
Luke 13:24 (KJB) Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
We are given a promise by God that He will reward us with eternal life, but if people are not going to repent of their sins, and choose to live a life of reckless disobedience towards the will of God, then they are going to come up short of the prize of everlasting inheritance.
Hebrews 4:1-2 (KJB) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Listen very closely,…..
Obedience towards God is the evidence of faith. Disobedience towards God is the evidence of unbelief. People who make the critical and damning error of not being able to discern between the two of these statements are going to be in for a huge shock at Judgment Day. It doesn’t matter if you claim to be a Christian or not, because if you are going to live like a wicked and heartless wretch, then you will be treated as such.
Romans 2:5-11 (KJB) But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God.
The reason why God gives us these promises, is so that through faith, we will trust Him enough to humble ourselves and submit completely to His perfect will.
2 Peter 1:4 (KJB) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
God loved us so much that He grants each of us a portion of grace; but it is for the purpose of changing our ways and repenting of sin. Sinners who depart from iniquity will live eternally and be rewarded by God But those who choose not to love God in return, are going to find themselves being cast into a lake of everlasting torment forever.
Revelation 21:7-8 (KJB) He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Remember that we receive blessings from God when we walk according to His will, and Abraham was so obedient, that he was called the friend of God. But obedience comes at a cost, because it is something that you must strive diligently to obtain, just like working hard at maintaining a good grade point average during the school year.
When you trust in the promise of your dad, and become faithfully obedient to his commands, you will eventually become the benefactor of his kindness, when he bestows upon you a tackle box filled up with goodies, and sets you adrift, in,….
