Good morning and welcome to everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Romans.
Rom 7:2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
As we talked about recently, marriage is a union that can only be separated by physical death. Certainly there is divorce that happens every single day out in the world, but it is simply a legal proceeding done in the eyes of earthly law. Many times it is simply a way for a spouse to divide up earthly assets or receive other monies. But in the Christian Realm, divorce is treated much differently then the way that they treat it in the world. Granted, all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God but when we first become Christians and get water baptized by submersion, all of our past sins can be forgiven by God. Maybe you committed adultery or got divorced or even remarried before you became a believer, but now those deeds are washed away through Christ Jesus. That’s why the Apostle Paul teaches, …”and such were some of you.”
1 Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Once we get submerged in water we begin a new life with Christ Jesus where God’s Holy Word becomes a guide for us to live a life that is pleasing unto him. Divorce may have happened in your past but as a born again believer it is forbidden. Millions of professing conservative Christians believe the exact same things that I do. As a Christian wife, she is bound in a lifelong commitment to her husband, a bond that can only be broken by His death.
1 Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
All kinds of sins can be committed in a marriage by both a husband or a wife, but as a Christian we are not living under Judaism, which means even if they committed adultery, that’s not an excuse to break the bond of marriage. If you choose to get married, you had better be ready to suffer at times. Even if your spouse deceives you or lies to you, it’s no different than if they committed adultery against you because all sin is equal in the eyes of God.
James 2:10-11 (KJB) For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
The Covenant of marriage is until death do us part, but if a woman divorces her husband, she has already broken the covenant of God. It doesn’t matter if the husband dies after that, because she already destroyed the marriage, and is no longer his wife anymore. The Lord Jesus commands that she is not supposed to depart her husband’s side for any reason. It’s easy to get divorced, and only take the flick of the pen, but the Christian Life is much more demanding, because it can require much suffering, but that is called charity, and you must be merciful and long-suffering with each other, just as Christ has been towards you. Going to law with each other is simple, but showing charity is much more difficult, but that is what Jesus did towards this entire world, when He died on the cross for our sins. No one is supposed to be involved, breaking the marriage asunder.
Mark 10:6-9 (KJB) But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Divorce has become so common nowadays that many people who profess to be Christian feel it’s acceptable to divorce their spouse for whatever reason they want, but it only reveals a complete lack of divine charity in their lives. When a wife chooses to leave her husband, she begins sinning against him each and every day. Unlike other sins that you might commit only once, separating from a spouse is a continual day by day sin that starts again each and every morning when the husband rises out of bed and realizes that his wife that he devoted his life to is not with him.
As an example, imagine some children getting on the school bus but every single morning one of them punches another in the stomach. It happens each morning, day in and day out. When a wife departs her husband, the sin that she commits is compounded every day like interest on a bank load. It’s a perpetual state of sin. Before you became a Christian you might have committed adultery or you might have divorced a spouse and remarried but once you become baptized by submersion into the name of Jesus Christ, all of the sins of the past are forgiven so that you can begin a new life of faithfulness to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and walk a life of love. Once you begin the Christian Life divorce is forbidden because it truly goes completely against everything that our Lord Jesus Christ stands for, LOVE. If she decides to divorce him for any reason, she is outside of the Covenant of God, and is in a state of rebellion against the will of God.
Remember that the scriptures teach us that God is love. Because God is eternal, Divine charity is eternal and true charity never faileth. The Lord Jesus has already proved His love for us by dying on the cross for our sins. We show Jesus how much we love Him by submitting to His teachings and His commands. Those who don’t want to suffer, and refuse to abide in their marriage are not keeping the Commandments of Christ, and are a liar. The Lord Jesus submitted to the Heavenly Father perfectly which showed his intense love for Him. Moses also served and obeyed God which showed his love for Him. A wife shows love for her husband through her obedience and submission to Him. He is her direct authority. She needs to obey him in everything to prove her love for both him and the commands of Christ.
Ephesians 5:22-24 (KJB) Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Men don’t ever divorce your wives, and you wives must never depart your husbands. This is because the Covenant of marriage is a Divine and unbreakable decree, a lifelong commitment,….
