Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Maybe some of you have heard about the new cameras that they have been putting up all over the country, that are using artificial intelligence to capture information about the type of car that you are driving, including your license plate. They are gathering information and tracking people’s driving habits, even though there is absolutely no reason to do so. Apparently, these cameras are able to track individual people, not just vehicles, as I have seen in some of their video footage. This type of surveillance has caused a huge uproar throughout the country, because it’s considered a form of harassment, no different than a stranger following you around in a dark alley. I’m sure that many of the creators of this surveillance type equipment would be absolutely furious if their next door neighbor mounted some cameras up in their trees so they could look into their backyard, so that they could gain information about the personal lives of them and their families.
This reminds me of Christian Life.
The Bible condemns being a busy body in other men’s matters. This can happen when you choose to involve yourself in their private matters, such as reading their letters that are meant to be kept secret. This is such a terrible sin that it is likened unto murder in the Bible. People such as these are snoops, who cannot seem to find something better to do with their day.
1 Peter 4:15 (KJB) But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
A busy body is extremely nosy and will interject themselves into the private affairs of other people, even offering advice that was never even asked for. A meddler is somebody who interferes in private matters without any right or the invitation to do so. Even getting involved in an argument that you are not a party too is foolish behavior, and will bring about strife.
Proverbs 26:17 (KJB) He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.
In the following passage is an example of a group of busy bodies who only came out to hear Jesus preach in order to find something out about Him.
Matthew 22:15-21 (KJB) Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
Paul taught Timothy that younger widows needed to be refused, because it would result in them becoming a busy body and filled up with idle speech
1 Timothy 5:9-15 (KJB) Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan.
A busy body will poke their nose into the private matters of others, and will ask prying questions in order to dig something up about them. People such as these thrive on secret information, things that are actually none of their business in the first place. The church was commanded to study to be quiet.
1 Thessalonians 4:11 (KJB) And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
So we must mind our own business, and bridle the tongue, something that can only be tamed by the power of the Holy Spirit.
James 3:2-8 (KJB) For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Privacy has always been a serious issue to people, because when you involve yourself as a busy body in the private concerns of other men, you sin against them. I guess that it has always reminded me of all the information that they gather out in the world every single day. It’s like a person looking at their neighbor’s backyard with a pair of binoculars, or a traffic camera peering down on you, just like…
