Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to continue looking at a passage of scripture from the book of 1st Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 7:12-17 (KJB) But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife? But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
In the world, there are many people who get married every single day, but at the time, both of them are complete unbelievers and have never been baptized. But sometime during their marriage, one of them might become filled up with faith and start following the Lord Jesus and the teachings of the Christian faith. But when one of them becomes a believer, even though their spouse is in a state of unbelief, they are not supposed to depart from them. After all, they are your spouse, and if you genuinely care about them I would hope you would like to be able to see them in heaven someday. If they are happy to dwell with you, don’t leave them because there is a chance that through your example in your life, you might be able to save them eternally. You also must remember that King Solomon was married to numerous wives who were still involved in their own false religious practices. But the problem was that he ended up loving them a little bit too much, and rather than trying to convert them to his faith, he ended up burning incense to false gods. It’s one thing to love and care for your spouse, but the purpose of a Christian is to be an influence of faith in the home, in order to hopefully convert them to Christianity, rather than the other way around.
1 Kings 11:1-4 (KJB) But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
This is one of the reasons why we must not love anything or anyone above Jesus, because not only is it a violation of the first commandment, but it can greatly affect your decision making.
Matthew 22:36-38 (KJB) Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
A man in his home is the authority over his household, and if his wife is an unbeliever who bears his children, he can teach and guide his little ones in the doctrines of the Christian faith. If the husband is an unbeliever, a Christian wife abides under his leadership and authority, and she must obey him in everything. She is absolutely forbidden from preaching and teaching the Word of God, whether it’s to him or others in the home, but she can still be a great influence around the house. She does this by being an example of Holy and obedient living towards the things of God. Her husband can be won to the Christian faith without the Word, which means no teaching scripture. Even an unbelieving spouse will take note of your sincere, chaste, and pure-hearted love towards them, along with your complete submission to His commands and requests. A man can tell if you truly love him, or are just a disobedient and conniving wretch. Do you really want to save him? Then be quiet, and love and obey him in everything, and above all things, be patient!
1 Peter 3:1-6 (KJB) Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
In a marriage, you enter into a state of bondage with your spouse, tying the knot (so to speak) with each other. You make a solemn commitment to abide by each other’s side until death parts you. Christians are forbidden from divorcing their spouse for any reason, and are supposed to be an example of fidelity, not only in society, but towards the one that they chose to spend the rest of their life with. When someone makes the choice to get baptized into the faith, and then later on divorces their own spouse, they completely reject scriptural teachings on charity, long suffering, and mercy. People leave marriages because they don’t want to suffer anymore, well to be blunt with you, that’s just too bad. If you cannot suffer for others, then you have quickly forgotten how Jesus suffered for you on the cross, and each time that you have sinned against Him. Wake up unmerciful people, and don’t dishonor the Christian Life by doing such wicked deeds, especially to your own children.
But if your spouse decides to leave, and doesn’t want to stick around anymore, we are called to peace and must let them go. I’ve dealt with the same kind of things as many of you have. I loved my wife more dearly than any other woman in this world, but even when were baptized together, and I gave her Holy Communion, and educated her in the teachings of our faith, she eventually rejected it all, and went right back into the world all over again. It’s very difficult to see people forsake the matters concerning their own salvation, but it’s going to happen, and to more people then you think. Jesus taught that many people will try to get into heaven, but He will turn them away.
You cannot force people to abide in their marriage if they really don’t love and care about you, and if they leave you, you are no longer under bondage to them, and are free to be married to whomever you will without a violation of conscience. But just remember, a marriage is supposed to be an example of what charity is all about, and there is no way that anybody who claims to be a Christian could ever divorce their spouse, because it is to forsake one of the greatest doctrines of the Christian Life,…Charity.
So, be merciful and patient with each other through whatever you might have to endure, and these are just a few more of my thoughts, on,……
