Sex and Marriage Pt. 4

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to continue looking at a passage of scripture from the book of 1st Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 7:25-28 (KJB)  Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful. I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be. Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.

Usually when people enter into a marriage, everybody will tell them that they are going to have a wonderful life together, but the Apostle teaches differently. He teaches that when people get married they are going to have to suffer in the flesh. What? How can that be? After all, you both love each other right? The Apostle Peter loved the Lord Jesus very much and followed Him everywhere that He went, but he still sinned against Him three times when he denied even knowing the Lord. Likewise, during any marriage you will have to inevitably deal with sins that are committed against you by your own spouse. I don’t think anybody really wants to believe that’s going to happen, but it does, whether it’s a slip of the tongue, or coming home after a hard day’s work, and taking out your stress on your spouse.

If the marriage is going to last, you will have to deal with a certain amount of fleshy behavior from the one that you chose to spend the rest of your life with. I have said it many times before, but sometimes the one that you care about the most, can become your greatest enemy! If you don’t want to commit to loving somebody enough to stand by their side no matter how they might treat you in the future, then there is a simple situation, don’t get married! If you have sexual desires and cannot avoid fornication, then you must accept all the rest of the occasional baggage and suffering that comes with being married. Oh I’m sure a lot of people look happily married when you see them walking hand in hand downtown, but we actually don’t see the things that they deal with in their everyday relationships in private. If you can’t deal with a certain amount of suffering along the way, then rethink the reason for marrying somebody.

Jesus suffered for our sins when He took the nails for each of us on the cross, and if you truly love your spouse you will do the same towards them. It’s not in human nature to allow ourselves to suffer in such a manner, but this is one of the reasons why we must become followers of Christ Jesus. One of the qualities of God’s Holy Spirit is Divine charity, and it puts up with a lot of grief over an extended period of time.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (KJB)  Charity suffereth long,…..

1 Peter 4:8 (KJB)  And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

There will be growing pains in a marriage, and that is the way it is. To get married and then start building a life together, having children, and then throwing it all away, is like building a new house, working on it for many years, only to have it run over by a bulldozer. The only deal is, the one who leaves and divorces their spouse is the one who is driving the wrecking equipment.

Proverbs 14:1 (KJB)  Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

The Apostle Paul wanted young women to get married and bear children, but marriage is not an absolute requirement, for either one of the sexes. In fact, if you can abide in your virginity you will do far better, because once again, there is going to be a certain amount of suffering that you will have to endure during a marriage. Once again, divorce is forbidden as a Christian, no matter what sins might be committed during the marriage. The Apostle instructs the men of the church that if they are married, don’t seek to be loosed, and if your wife divorced you, try to keep from getting married again if you can. But remarriage after somebody else put forth paperwork and divorced you is not a sin in the eyes of God. They divorced you, not the other way around. Let’s look at the last part of this chapter.

1 Corinthians 7:32-35 (KJB)  But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.

When you get married, there are certain needs that you will have to attend to, such as the sexual needs of your spouse, and the care of your children. There are only so many hours in the day, and when you are married, some of them are going to have to be devoted to providing for the needs of your family. That in and of itself is an act of Charity towards them. But when you are single, you have a lot more time available to seek after the things of God. You must understand that there will not be marriage in heaven, but we will be able to praise the Lord and enjoy eternal life with each other as the children of God. I’m fairly certain that we will be able to recognize each other when we are there, because at the transfiguration, Moses and Elijah both appeared with Jesus, but that’s a topic for another discussion. Those who abide in their virginity can serve the Lord without distraction, and I guarantee that if you enter into marriage vows with somebody else, sometimes there can be very pressing needs that you will have to attend to. But even though this will happen, we must always maintain a steadfast and daily relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter was married, but he always maintained the work that he did for the church, and his family life at the same time.

Lastly today,…..

1 Corinthians 7:39-40 (KJB)  The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

If a woman has remained in her marriage to her husband without getting divorced, once he passes away she is free to be married to another. If she divorced him beforehand, that’s a completely different issue, because she already destroyed her marriage and violated the Commandments of Christ. If he dies, and she has been faithful to her marriage commitments, she can remarry without a violation of conscience, but it would be far better to abide as a single woman. If she does get remarried, she must make sure that the man that she chooses has a certain amount of faith in Christ and His teachings, otherwise because he will be the authority figure, you could possibly be lead to get involved with all kinds of different false religions. So just a few more of my thoughts today on,…….
