Good morning and welcome everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of second Thessalonians.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (KJB) And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
Many people really don’t think about death for the Judgment of God until some type of tragic events happen in the news. They tend to want to keep focused on what is going on within their own inner circle, rather than paying attention to everything else in the world. But although you might not see it often, death is something that happens every single day in this world, as the souls of men are reaped by the hand of God. But before that day happens, God gives everybody an opportunity to be saved eternally, and it begins by receiving forgiveness for your sins through faith in Christ Jesus, and repenting from all of the dead works of darkness.
2 Peter 3:9 (KJB) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
The Apostle teaches that there are two classes of people who are going to come up short of the kingdom of God. The first group will be those who completely rejected God’s incredible Gift of forgiveness that He made available through the sacrifice of His precious Son Jesus. To reject Christ Jesus is to reject God’s offer of grace, and without His Mercy, people will die in a state of sin, and be punished eternally from the presence of God.
John 8:21-24 (KJB) Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
To die outside of faith in Christ Jesus, is to die outside the free gift of God’s forgiveness, and there is not a single soul on the earth that has clean hands, because we all have sinned at one time or the other, and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23-25 (KJB) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans 3:9-12 (KJB) What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
When people reject the free gift of God’s mercy, they are going to pay eternal consequences for their unforgiven sins.
Romans 6:23 (KJB) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Those who really think that they have never sinned are only deceiving themselves.
1 John 1:8-10 (KJB) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
The second group of people who will be punished by God are those who were baptized into the faith, and even had Holy communion in the church, but they never truly submitted to the will God, nor repented from sinful living. These are people who might call themselves a Christian, but it is by name only, because they truly are not sincere followers of the teachings of Christ. People such as these will bring upon themselves the reproach of God.
Luke 6:46 (KJB) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
It doesn’t matter how many times you went to church or how much of the Bible that you may have memorized, because if you never do what Scripture teaches, then you really aren’t a soldier of Christ, you are just a weekend warrior. Without Godly sorrow and repentance from dead works, people are going to perish, no matter if they claim to be a Christian or not. This is why James warned the church to be doers of the Word!
James 1:22-25 (KJB) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Many of the people that Jesus preached felt that they were on their way to heaven, but he warned them many times that repentance is required in order to get there. Just like the Pharisees, many people who claim to be Christian will be filled with all kinds of religious activities, but they still won’t be able to enter into heaven simply because they never sincerely repented from dead works.
Matthew 7:21-27 (KJB) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Many people in society can repent of their sins and even change their lives around, but if they don’t come to Christ Jesus and get forgiven for their past, then they will be punished for their unforgiven sins. People can claim to be a Christian and even be baptized into the faith, but if they never truly repent and continue to live lives of sin, they won’t enter into heaven either. Our salvation requires getting forgiven by God, and transforming from sinners into Saints, and those who put forth no initiative to fulfill these requirements, will only find themselves cast away from God at,…..
