Christian Construction

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Every single day, people are building something somewhere, whether it’s a dog house for their pooch, or a small shed to keep all of their tools in. Others are involved in much larger projects such as high-rise buildings, skyscrapers, or multi-level business offices. But it’s incredible when you realize how many people are directly involved in the construction of these buildings. There are financial backers, architects, structural engineers, electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, mason’s carpenters, heavy equipment operators, and even building inspectors and zoning officials just to name a few.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

The church is very much like a large construction project that involves many different people. Each of them possess certain gifts and abilities that have been gifted to them by God, and are used to help in the building of the Spiritual Church of God.

1 Corinthians 12:1-31 (KJB)  Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.

If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Just like a construction project, there are many different workers in the church who are constantly helping it to grow. But whatever abilities that have been given to them by God, they are just as important as everybody else. Can you imagine a modern day building without any electricity? Can you imagine a large apartment complex without any kind of supporting walls? Everybody can lend a hand in the church according to the gifts that they have been given, and as the Apostle explains, he laid the foundation, but others built upon it.

1 Corinthians 3:4-11 (KJB)  For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

The Apostle Paul wasn’t at the churches all of the time, and he was depending on other men he had chosen to lend a hand and continue to help the church to grow. If you are lacking certain gifts or abilities, then you need to fast and pray for them, having a great desire to possess them for the edification of the church. Whether it’s prophecy, tongues, or the gifts of healing, we must use all of the gifts that each of us have been given by God, because no matter how big or small the gift may be, all of them play a very important and active role when it comes down to,..
